Tenerife is the largest Canary Island and the most diverse, situated closer to Africa than to Spain it offers a warmer climate than the other islands. The beaches in Tenerife are dramatically black, although there are some palm-lined stretches of golden sands, which have been imported from the Sahara Desert. Warm clear seas are perfect for swimming and watersports. If you fancy a change of scenery, inland Tenerife is stunningly different. You can explore the rural hillside towns and villages and bizarre landscapes of twisted lava-rock, with giant cacti, banana plantations and pine forests. A visit to Mount Teide (known as the jewel in the Canarian crown it is one of the world’s largest volcanic craters and one of Spain’s highest mountains) is well worth it. For family fun why not try Loro Parque, in Puerto de la Cruz, this combines a Zoo, Aquarium and Botanical Gardens. Although all the resorts have a good selection of bars and restaurants, if nightlife is what you are looking for, then Playa de las Americas is where you need to head to. All in all Tenerife can suit everyone’s holiday needs.
