Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and is situated in the English Channel close to the Northern coast of France. It is a Crown dependency not a part of the United Kingdom.

Jersey has a mild climate the whole year round. It has average lows during the coolest months of about 4ºC. During the summer months, the temperature averages around 21ºC.

Jersey has over 10 major beaches with gorgeous white sand and boasts over 50 miles of coastline. Most of the beaches on Jersey have good amenities and attract a lot of summer holiday makers due to the picturesque settings and lovely climate. If you prefer something a little more rustic and private then head out of the major areas and look for the secluded numerous bays and coves You are quite likely to be the only person at some of these places.

One of the major attractions which is shown on the Jersey £1 note is La Hougue Bie. It is one of the best-preserved Neolithic tombs in Europe. It dates from around 3500BC. The tomb was designed in a way that during both the Spring and Autumn equinox the sun will shine through the main passageway and reach the back wall. The tomb remained largely undisturbed even with two medieval churches being built on its summit, one in the 12th and the other in the 16th century until its discovery.

St Helier which was named after a Hermit who lived on nearby Hermitage rock. He lived in the hermitage until he was brutally slain by pirates around 550AD. The hermitage is accessible to the traveller during low tide. A trip to St Helier is not complete without a visit to Royal Square which was the site of the battle of Jersey in 1781 and in the centre of the square is a statue to George 2nd. The focal point of St Helier however is Liberation Square where a statue was erected in 1995 to celebrate 50 years since the Nazi occupation was removed and 50 years of peace.
