Airport welcomes Assisted Travel volunteers for summer season

With the holiday season now in full swing, Norwich Airport has welcomed seven new Assisted Travel volunteers who will be on hand throughout the summer to help passengers who may need some extra support.

Last summer the Assisted Travel service was used by 4,373 outbound and inbound passengers. Support from trained staff is available for passengers from the moment they arrive at the airport, whether through the front door or aboard an inbound aircraft.

This summer seven new trained volunteers have taken up their roles as part of the Assisted Travel team. They are: Louise Baker, Julian Corps, Linda Morgan, Tom O’Brien, Pauline Taylor, Angel Waterton and Sarah Watson.

Their role is to ensure that Assisted Travel passengers enjoy a stress-free experience, whether that’s by helping with reduced mobility, supporting a hidden disability or even preparing assistance dogs for a flight.

Dan Bean, Norwich Airport’s Ground Handling and Safety Manager, is responsible for overseeing the airport’s Assisted Travel team. He said: “We’re proud to have this fantastic group of volunteers who bring so much enthusiasm and care to the job. Their support is invaluable in helping passengers who require assistance on their journey through the airport. Our aim is to ensure every passenger feels supported, respected and confident when they travel, and the volunteers play a vital role in making that happen.”

The new recruits come from a variety of backgrounds but share a passion for helping people. Here’s what some of them had to say about their experience so far:

Louise Baker: “Volunteering offers so many benefits: gaining confidence, developing practical and communication skills, meeting new people, and giving something back to the community. I’ve really enjoyed the variety each shift brings – from assisting passengers to learning about how the airport functions behind the scenes. It’s rewarding to know I’m making a difference in people’s journeys.”

Sarah Watson: “I have met and helped some amazing people and I go home at the end of each shift with the feeling that I’ve really helped passengers and made a difference by giving reassurance from a friendly face, as it can be a scary and daunting place. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys meeting and helping people; it is so rewarding.”

Pauline Taylor: “I have enjoyed every aspect of the role. Every day you meet different people, and it is nice being able to support customers, ensuring they have a good experience during their transit through the airport. I have enjoyed working with some fantastic staff who have made me feel like part of the airport family.”

Angel Waterton: “The idea of helping behind the scenes, making sure everything runs smoothly, really appealed to me.  I also really enjoy the feeling of accomplishment after a busy shift, knowing I’ve made a difference. It’s rewarding to give back to the community and be part of something bigger than myself. Everyone on the team is so supportive and friendly.”

Julian Corps: “What I enjoy the most is helping customers with Assisted Travel needs to get a good experience when travelling. It’s also a good opportunity to use my customer services skills and understand what’s involved running an airport.”

Any passenger requiring Assisted Travel support through Norwich Airport should book assistance in advance through their airline, tour operator or travel agent. To find out more visit the airport website.
